A study has been made of the effect of preheating Co/Al2O3 and Co/SiO2 catalysts in a stream of air on their susceptibility to reduction and catalytic properties in the synthesis of hydrocarbons from CO and H2. It has been shown that as the pretreatment temperature increases there is a decrease in the extent of Co reduction for both systems together with a decrease in the yield of liquid synthesis products for Co/SiO2 and an increase in yield for Co/Al2O3. It is proposed that interaction between cobalt oxide and Al2O3 during preheating produces additional active centers on the surface of the sample.
