The effect of oxide-oxide interaction on the catalytic properties of Co in CO hydrogenation was studied using a Co/Al2O3 catalyst as an example. It is shown that suppression of oxide-oxide interaction by modifying the surface of the Al2O3 support with magnesium oxide enhances the catalytic activity. The formation of MgAl2O3 spinel on the Al2O3 surface decreases the Lewis acidity of the surface and, as a result, changes the amount of carbon deposited on the catalyst surface during hydrogenation.
