Valence states, surface concentrations, and electronic structures of Ni, Pd, Re, Rh, and Pt supported on γ-Al2O3, SiO2, and Y-zeolites were studied by XPS at different stages of catalyst preparation, activation, and catalytic reactions. In active forms of the catalysts of C6H6 hydrogenation (Re/γ-Al2O3) and ethylene cyclotrimerization (Rh/γ-Al2O3F), metals are present as electron-deficient clusters.
