Iron ammonia synthesis catalyst in oxidized form is semiconductor of complex composition. Ammonia synthesis catalysts are prepared in two stages-oxidative fusion of iron with subsequent introduction of promotors (or electrical fusion of magnetite), and reduction of melt obtained in synthesis column or outside, it. In reduction process, catalyst is ultimately formed, acquiring all properties inherent to finished catalyst. In present article, study is made ofeffect of chemical composition on microstructure of samples of ammonia synthesis catalyst at various stages of reduction. Change in microstructure of magnetite catalysts of various compositions has been considered as function of degree of reduction. Use of petrographic method of study is proposed to determine quality and degree of reduction of catalyst.
