The change of the surface state of catalysts under the influence of the reaction medium may be represented as the formation of a series of surface phases (S.Ph.). The effect of the SPh formation on the chemisorption kinetics, the specificity of planes in catalysis; and order-disorder transfromation -on the kinetics of oxidation reactions is discussed.
