12-Heteropolyacids, H4[SiW12O40] and H3[PMo12O40], and their reduced forms are shown to bind strongly to anion-exchange polymers. Immobilized heteropolyacids (HPAs) retain some of the properties of HPAs in homogeneous solutions, e.g. ability to undergo a multi-electron reduction; however, they lose the ability of homogeneous HPAs to catalyze the evolution of dihydrogen from water. A possible reason for the decreased catalytic properties of immobilized HPAs is distortion of the HPA framework upon deprotonation.
