This chapter discusses the scientific basis of catalyst preparation. A focus of the chapter is on the changes of the inner surface, pore structure, concentration, and distribution of the active component of the catalyst. One of the basic parameters determining the catalytic activity is the degree of surface development—that is, high dispersion of the active component. The most common method for dispersion of the active component consists in precipitation from aqueous solutions. In particular, this method is employed to obtain hydroxide compounds of the majority of elements used in the preparation of catalysts and supports. With an increase in pH of the reaction medium upon adding a precipitating agent to the salt solution, the first step of the process is the formation of hydroxide containing greater or lesser amounts of basic or acid salts. The hydrolysis products undergo rapid polymerization and condensation to form relatively stable poly molecules, which may be considered primary elements of the precipitate. An important fact is the independence of the size of primary particles of oversaturation as they are formed.
