Abstract:
An IR spectral study showed that the reaction of H2S with the oxidized surface of a Sn-Mo oxide catalyst leads to a decreased concentration of surface acid centers (Lewis, Broensted) although the concentration of Broensted centers is decreased to a lesser extent than is the concentration of Lewis centers. The remaining Lewis centers are associated mainly with Sn4+ ions since the Mo6+ sites are converted to MoS2 (not a Lewis acid under these conditions). There is an increase in the relative fraction of Broensted acid sites due to the formation of Sn sulfates.
