Abstract: The activity of nitrates in the oxidation of organic sulfides to sulfoxides decreased in the order dioxonium nitrate > sulfonium nitrate > AcONO2 > LiNO3 > NaNO3. A radical mechanism was suggested, and the role of N2O3 and N2O4 was discussed. In the presence of Pd2+ a molecular mechanism may operate.
