Abstract: The kinetics and mechanism of propylene oxidation on a multicomponent oxide catalyst whose phase composition consisted of Bi, Co, Fe, and Ni molybdates were examined Decreasing selectivity for acrolein and increasing selectivity for acrylic acid with increasing degree of conversion were evidence for a consecutive oxidation pathway; decreasing selectivity for allyl alc. with increasing degree of conversion was evidence for its conversion to acrolein. Temperature and O2 concentration effects on the product distribution were examined The maximum in the yield vs. conversion plot for acrolein formation was attributed to the retarding effect of acrylic acid and the autocatalytic effect of acrolein. A graphic mechanistic reaction model was formulated, and graph theory was applied to extraction of the rate of acrolein formation: theory differed from experiment within the error limits of experiment
